With almost everything being easily accessible through the internet and mobile phones, we are easily distracted by technology and hardly have time to appreciate the small things in life such as a good old book. D.E.A.R. Day or Drop Everything and Read Day is a celebration of reading, literacy and family.

D.E.A.R. Day Origin

The National Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day is a special day declared and recognized by HarperCollins that falls on the same days as the birthday of Beverly Cleary, the Newbery Medal-winning author who came up with the character Ramona Quimby, the Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day spokesperson.

Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day is an event promoted and sponsored by several companies and organizations such as National Education Association, HarperCollins Children’s Books, Walden Media, Association for Library Service to Children and so much more. The goal is to promote sustained silent reading of all ages.

D.E.A.R. Day Celebration

  • In schools, Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day is celebrated having a week to a month-long reading time. Students get at least 30 minutes to do nothing but read, every single day. There are also reading and literacy activities in campuses such as character parade, skits and reading rallies, writing contests and contests.
  • Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day is the perfect day to visit the library to read by yourself or donate books.
  • For those who have a knack for storytelling, celebrating Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day at orphanages or children’s shelters through storytelling is also a good idea.

D.E.A.R. Day Facts

  • Although Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) Day is assigned as April 12, many school are encouraged to have a Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) time at least once a week to promote reading and literacy, especially in young children.
  • Beverly Cleary has written over 30 books for children and young adults and has been published in about 20 different languages. Aside from being multi-awarded as an author, Beverly Cleary’s legacy has been noted by some university residences bearing her name and a movie adaptation of her book Ramona and Beezus which starred Joey King and Selena Gomez.
