EARTH DAY 2017

Preservation and conservation of natural resources are the major needs of our planet today.  To emphasize the need for mankind to do this, a special day is dedicated to it.  But if you read the news every day, you’ll realize that even our planet earth is calling us to action.  The storm surge which devastated Tacloban in the Philippines is a concrete evidence of what will happen if we engage in logging and not replace the number of trees we cut.

When is Earth Day in 2017?

Earth Day is on April 22, 2017, a Saturday.

Earth Day is always observed in the United States of America on the twenty second day of April each year.

The Origin, History and Purpose of the Earth Day:

Earth Day’s inaugural celebration was in April 22, 1970.  Founded by a former American Senator Gaylord Nelson, this day aims to spread awareness and recognition for planet Earth’s ecosystem.  Its first celebration created the first environmental conservationist group.

This is the result of the recorded protest of more than twenty million people against industrial revolution on the said day.

Though this event is labelled as anti-capitalistic, Walt Disney Productions showed support by releasing a documentary film entitled “Earth” in 2009.  In 2011, twenty eight million trees were planted in Afghanistan on Earth Day.  China’s support was shown in 2012 when more than a hundred thousand people rode bikes on Earth Day.

The Earth Day Observance:

Countries all over the world organize events in celebration for Earth Day.  Schools hold Earth Day themed competitions on crafts, card making, photography, quiz bowls, essay writing, video presentations and poem writing.  In other key cities, week-long activities are prepared culminating on April 22.

Civic organizations participate in the observance of Earth Day through engaging in recycling activities, symposia on energy and water conservation, or doing lectures on proper waste disposal.  Sports clubs would do cleaning up of coral reefs and seashores or planting endangered plant species.  Universities would include film reviews from their students on environmental movies.
