The Origin and Purpose of the Frederick Douglass Day:

The Frederick Douglass Day was founded by Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard scholar, in 1926.  The date corresponds to the birthday of Frederick Douglass.  It is a day to honour and uphold the legacy of Frederick Douglass and increase the awareness about the continuing crises of contemporary slavery.

Who is Frederick Douglass?

Frederick Douglass’ real name is Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey.  Born in servitude at 1818 in Maryland, he escaped in 1838 and became a statesman, writer, orator and reformer in Bedford, Massachusetts.  He was the first African American nominated for Vice Presidency of the United States.  His running mate was Victoria Woodhull of the Equal Rights Party ticket.

With his life and work, he proved that slaves have the intellectual faculty to function as an American citizen.  He was a major proponent of women’s suffrage.  He wrote many speeches and autobiographies, such as “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave” in 1845 and “Life and Times of Frederick Douglass” which was published in 1881.

The Frederick Douglass Day celebration:

The commemorative day begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Frederick National Historic Site in Cedar Hill, Washington DC.  It is followed by a program featuring human rights speakers, recitations of excerpts from Frederick Douglass speeches and readings from his work.  A tour is also conducted at his former home which is now the historical site.  Music performances and film showings are also done.
