Corruption is everywhere. Whether a government is a democracy, republic, monarchy, aristocracy or dictatorship, there is always a corruption issue. From higher to lower levels of government, corruption is present. International Anti-corruption Day is a time to be aware of these issues, and help fight and prevent it.

International Anti-corruption Day 2017

International Anti-corruption Day 2017 will be on Saturday, December 9, 2017.

International Anti-corruption Day is observed every year on the 9th of December.

International Anti-corruption Day Background

Corruption is a complex political, social and economic phenomenon affecting all countries around the world. It slows economic development, undermines democratic institutions and contributes to governmental instability. Corruption may refer to those in position who use their power or the people’s trust for dishonest gain. It comes in many forms such as bribery, breaking the law without proper or fair punishment, dishonestly amending election results and silencing whistleblowers (people who expose corruption hoping for justice to be done).

On October 31, 2003, the UN General Assembly designated the 9th of December as Anti-corruption Day. Its purpose is to raise awareness of corruption and the United Nations Convention’s role in combating and preventing it.
