Leif Erikson Day Origin
Leif Erikson Day is an annual celebration that gives honor to the bearer of that name, Leif Erikson. He was a Norse explorer (North Germanic seafarers who explored Europe, Asia and the North Atlantic islands) who first brought Europeans to North America.
Leif Erikson was recognized by President Calvin Coolidge as the Discoverer of America as a result of the research of Norwegian-American scholars. Observance of Leif Erikson Day has been made official in seven states (Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Illinois, Colorado, Washington and California) in 1956. Las Vegas, Nevada also made it official in 2012. October 9 was the date of arrival of the Ship Restoration in New York Harbor in 1825.
As a child, Leif Erikson was fond of watching ships in the harbor and listening to sailors’ tales. He had his first voyage at the age of 24 and it was also in this voyage that he had his only son.
