 National Aviation Day Origin

In 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordered an establishment of National Aviation Day. He chose August 19, the birthday of Orville Wright, to honor the first person who successfully flew an aircraft.

The Aviation Story

The Wright Brothers made a mark on history on December 17, 1903. With attempts to use controllers to steer and eventually fly an aircraft, it flew for twelve seconds. Though it only navigated for 120 feet, it created an impact for it was the first aircraft to be navigated using controllers.

National Aviation Day Activities

1) Have a flight story- this activity includes storytelling to children about the Wright brothers’ aircraft invention and the history of flight.

2) Be creative with aircrafts- make miniature aircrafts using colored papers, unused magazines or newspapers.

3) Pay The Wright Brothers National Memorial a visit- situated at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, it is a good place for observation. It is after all, the place where the Wright brothers tinkered with the project.
