The Origin and Purpose of the National Military Spouse Appreciation Day:
The National Military Spouse Appreciation Day was established on April 17, 1984, by then President Ronald Reagan, through Proclamation 5184. Its first celebration was in May 23 of the same year but Casper Weinberger, a former US Secretary of Defense, set its annual date as observed today.
This recognition day is in thanksgiving to the sacrifices, help and assistance of spouses of the country’s military personnel. This is one of the major May events annually in line with the America’s observance of its National Military Appreciation Month. This day is participated by America’s Army, Marines, Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force.
The National Military Spouse Appreciation Day Celebration:
Since this special day’s initial observance in 1984, the President of the United States of America delivers an annual traditional speech. As tribute to the spouses and children of the military staff, special acknowledgement is given for their three significant contributions:
- Bravery for the possible risk on the life of the soldier and family;
- Immediate relocation of the family in the event of overseas assignments; and,
- Separation from family during deployment.
