Patriots Day is annually celebrated on every third Monday of April.

Patriots Day Origin

Marked as the first fight of the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Patriots Day commemorates the battle of British regulars and Patriot militia that took place at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. The only states that celebrate Patriots Day are Massachusetts and Maine, which was once part of Massachusetts. Wisconsin values the celebration as well. Patriots Day was originally celebrated on every 19th of April and was later on changed to the third Monday of April in 1969.

Patriots Day Celebration

People in Maine and Massachusetts enjoy a three-day long weekend during the celebration and it also marks the first day of public school vacation week. Another reason people love this day is that when the celebration falls on income tax returns, they are given until midnight of the following day to settle it. In the areas of Lexington and Concord, re-enactments of the battles are done. One of the highlights of the day is the ringing of bell that signifies the warning done by local troops that British soldiers were approaching. Getting involved in sporting events, concerts along with parades are among the interesting activities that people do during this day.

In Wisconsin, Patriots Day is not considered a public holiday rather celebrated as a special observation day in public schools. On this day, schools are required to educate students about the significance of the event and the people who were involved in it such as Paul Revere and William Dawes.
