What is the Salvation Army?

The Salvation Army is a form of Christian religion and a global charitable non-profit society organized in 1865.  Based at London of the United Kingdom, it operates through a pseudo-military style.  It was first introduced to America by Lieutenant Eliza Shirley when she joined her parents in Philadelphia.  Her parents migrated to the U. S. in search of a better means of livelihood.

It was she who pleaded in 1879 to the Salvation Army’s founder, General William Booth, to send an official Salvation Army team in America from England.  This became a reality when Commissioner George Scott Railton and seven female officers arrived in New York in March 10, 1880.  This group created the Doughnut Day in 1938 to honour the people who gave doughnuts to World War I soldiers.

The Salvation Army Day observance:

The best way to observe this day is to participate in the activities of the Salvation Army, such as, shopping in their charity stores; volunteering services to their havens for the homeless; donating to their humanitarian causes or rehabilitation centres; and, joining their youth fellowships.

In Oxford of the United Kingdom, people are invited to watch the annual band parade and join other activities of the day.  Donating used clothing, appliances or things are also welcomed.  Organizing fund raising events are also encouraged as the Salvation Army currently works in 126 countries all over the world.
