Origin of the Special Education Day:

Special Education Day is a national holiday in the United States.  It was created for the people to reflect and make the necessary reforms in the first federal special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  This law was signed by President Gerald Ford on December 2, 1975.

The first Special Education Day was celebrated in December 2, 2005 which marked the 30th anniversary of IDEA.  Activities on this day are spearheaded by the Special Education Committee (SPEDCO).

Ways to celebrate the Special Education Day:

Sixty days prior to December 2 of each year, a series of activities are undertaken and culminates on the Special Education Day.  Aiming to provide learning for all students, be it under general or special education, schools and communities include in their calendar programs geared towards attainment of this goal.

School programs focus on the special child’s safety, adaptive physical education and customized instructions depending on the disability.  The activities are undertaken through segregation requiring personalized attention and supportive learning environment for the special children.

Special Education Day is observed in various ways globally.

Special Education Day and the National Mutt Day:

December 2 of each year is also the National Mutt Day.  Thus, community activities incorporate in their program awareness of the unfortunate situation of both the dog and the special children.  Activities therefore are focused on the betterment of their circumstances.
