TELL A FAIRY TALE DAY 2018

Many old practices done by parents with their children are slowly fading away.  Sad to say, this is common to all people of any culture and country.  For instance, in the Philippines, children are expected to be at six in the evening for the family evening prayer, “mano” or hand blessing of the elders to the young members of the family, dinner, and putting the children to bed through a fairy tale being read.  Due to changes in work hours, this has become a dying tradition.

When is the Tell a Fairy Tale Day in 2018?

Tell a Fairy Tale Day is on February 26, 2018, a Monday.

Tell a Fairy Tale Day is always observed in the United States of America on the 26th day of February each year.

Origin and Purpose of the Fairy Tale Day:

There is no official record as to the origin of this special day.  Speculations as to its founder are attributed to greeting card companies for business reasons.  The purpose of its observance though is to encourage people of all ages to read fairy tales and enjoy it.  It also provides encouragement for the child to love literature.

What is a Fairy Tale?

A Fairy tale is a short story that commonly features mythical and fantastic characters, such as, goblins, trolls, giants, gnomes, fairies and elves.  Stories are characterized by enchantment and magic which always starts with “Once upon a time…” and ends with “And they live happily ever after.”  This type of story teaches virtues and, its happy ending, hope.

The Tell a Fairy Tale Day observance:

Fairy Tales are “what dreams are made of, and without dreams, no hope.”  This is the essence of this special day.  To celebrate, parents and children are encouraged to come home early from work or school.  After sharing a family meal, a parent is to read the family members a fairy tale and discuss its lesson afterwards.

From the oldest fairy tale of Aesop to the Brothers Grimm and the modern day Walt Disney, a specific fairy tale may be chosen for the celebration of the day.  Fairy Tales are liken to a window to another world and opens the child’s imagination.  Technically, it is an active experience compared to watching television.  So, it would be best that, even just for this day, the television be turned off.
