Thesaurus Day 2018

Thesaurus Day 2018 will be on Thursday,  January 18, 2018.

Thesaurus Day takes place every year on January 18.

Thesaurus Day Origin

Thesaurus Day is celebrated on the day of birth of its author, Peter Mark Roget. He was born in 1779.

There is no record of the name of the originator of Thesaurus Day or its origin date. There are speculations that this day was first observed by a book company that publishes Thesaurus.

Thesaurus Facts

Thesaurus is a precious and invaluable book to writers and students. What is a Thesaurus? A thesaurus is a reference book that contains lists of words that have the same meanings (synonyms) and those that are opposite (antonyms). In contrast with a dictionary, in which words are written in alphabetical order, a thesaurus lists words according to their similarity in meaning. Additionally, a thesaurus does not provide the definition of words.

What is the purpose of this reference work? According to Peter Roget, it is ‘to find the words by which idea may be most fitly and aptly expressed’. It should be noted, though, that a thesaurus does not give a complete list of synonyms for each word.

Roget’s Thesaurus

The first modern thesaurus, Roget’s Thesaurus, was compiled by Peter Mark Roget in 1805. It was published on April 29, 1852 and since then, has been continuously printed and used worldwide. Roget’s original edition contained 15,000 words. The original manuscript is still being kept at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum.

The word “thesaurus” has been derived from the Latin thēsaurus, the romanization of the Greek θησαυρός (thēsauros), which literally means “treasure store”.
