Having adequate shelter is one of the basic rights of human. A habitat is a home or building in which an individual or family goes about daily life. Sadly, though, not everyone has an opportunity to have an appropriate habitat or shelter. It’s time to reflect on this basic human right this World Habitat Day.

World Habitat Day 2017

World Habitat Day 2017 will take place on Monday, October 2, 2017.

World Habitat Day is observed annually every first Monday of October.

World Habitat Day Origin 

World Habitat Day was first celebrated in 1986 and officially designated by the United Nations. The purpose of this day is to recognize the basic human right to have adequate shelter and the responsibility of the world for the habitat of future generations.

Since 1989, United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UNHSP) has been giving out Habitat Scroll of Honour awards to contributions related to human habitat.

World Habitat Day has a theme “Changing Cities, Building Opportunities”.

Taking Part in World Habitat Day

  1. Sign the World Habitat Day Pledge to End Poverty Housing.
  2. Display a Word Habitat Day Door. A door is a universal symbol of home. Encourage photo sharing of a decorated door in social media and create conversations.
  3. Donate to Habitat Organizations
  4. Find and join a local World Habitat Day event.
  5. Download and print the World Habitat Day pinup, which can be used for Youth Programs, Coloring Activities and Decorating Classrooms.
